CANNED FISH
Our cannery has been in operation since 1905, and has grown to produce the second biggest brand of pilchards in South Africa, Saldanha Pilchards. This product comes in a variety of sizes and flavours, with the top seller being the 400g Saldanha Pilchards in Tomato Sauce. The factory also produces a plethora of private label products for some of the biggest retailers and brands in South Africa.
The cannery is FSSC compliant and was the first canned fish processing facility in South Africa to do so. Our in-house quality control specialists, with help of a government regulatory body (NRCS), ensure that only the best quality fish is canned for local and export markets.
In addition to pilchards, the cannery also produces South African smoked sardines, which has become a staple in many South African homes since its inception.
Today our cannery provides much needed employment to more than 500 workers from the area surrounding St Helena Bay, where the factory is now located. From here the Saldanha brand continues to provide the quality products that have been bringing families together for more than 110 years.

FISHMEAL & FISH OIL
West Point has a large fishmeal and fish oil rendering plant which is able to process industrial fish at roughly 65 tons per hour. The processing plant continues to be upgraded to ensure that only the best quality is produced from the freshest raw material available, with plans to increase the capacity substantially over the coming years.
Sampling methods used for our fishmeal and fish oil:
- Fishmeal: Gafta 124
- Fish oil: ISO 5555
The fishmeal product is created to any specification required by our customers and is packed in 1 ton bulk bags and exported to many countries around the world. The fish oil is loaded into bulk flexi tanks and is exported mainly into the European markets.

CERTIFICATION & QUALITY
With stringent quality control specialists in-house, our plant is HACCP approved, and certified with MarinTrust, FEMAS, GACC and FDA approved. West Point has also been a proud member of IFFO since 2017.
Our product is continuously tested using our in-house laboratory, and corroborated by an independent inspection agency (SGS) using an accredited laboratory. This ensures that the quality of the product produced always aligns with the requested specifications given to us by our customers.
West Point Processors also works with the local government authorities (Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment) to ensure that species management and the environmental footprint we create are top of mind and well managed. The factory employs some of the top environmental specialists around to ensure compliance standards are maintained at world class levels.
